About Emma
Hi, I’m Emma. Working with mothers and babies is my passion and I have done so for over a decade now. I always knew that I wanted to work as a midwife, yet I left not long after my graduate year as I no longer wanted to be a part of the broken maternity system that regularly leaves women traumatised. I worked in maternal and infant health research for many years, during which time I had my two children. I had thought that my years of experience would help me when it came time to have my own.. how wrong I was. Underprepared and abandoned was how I felt.
I always knew I wanted to become a mother, yet the vision I held for motherhood, didn’t quite measure up to its reality. In fact, motherhood broke me. It stripped down the layers of who I used to be. I thought there was something wrong with me, and that I was failing.
Except I was not failing, I was being reborn.
So I started thinking, what if motherhood is supposed to do this to us? What if we are supposed to change - to grow and expand and instead it is society failing us in it’s complete lack of understanding for mothers as we go through this transition.
The lack of support for mothers drives me absolutely wild. Not just the lack of physical support, but emotional support as well. We are not only left with a new baby to learn how to mother, but also this whole new side of ourselves which is completely new and foreign to us as well.
When I first learnt about matrescence, I started to make sense of the journey that I had been on, and I started to envision a whole new way in which I wanted to support mothers. When I completed the Healing Birth Practitioner training, I felt like I had come home. Working with women and hearing their stories is an honour and I love what I do.
So here I am! I have two very cheeky, exuberant boys who now do actually sleep all night, one very supportive husband and we live in Perth, Western Australia. I am a major bookworm - I have a whole wall of my favourite books, and I love a good podcast!
